Jumping Off Rock

I had planned on going on two adventures this week, but a cancellation and a forecast of wet weather forced a change in plans. Now there would only be one adventure this week. A few weeks ago I had visited Jump Off Rock , a popular mountain overlook in Laurel Park, North Carolina. With the fall leaves showing full color, it was a good time to visit another similarly named mountain overlook, Jumping Off Rock , in Pickens County, South Carolina. Jumping Off Rock is about 9 to 10 miles down Horse Pasture Road, a windy, gravel laden, one lane forest road off US 178, now open year round to vehicles. The best way to travel Horse Pasture Road is with a high clearance vehicle such as a jeep or a truck. I didn't have either one, just a car, so I made a backup plan. I packed my gravel bike in my trunk and would stop and continue on bike when the road got too much for my low clearance car. At The Tall Pines And What We Found There

Recently, officials with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources  announced the opening of a new Wildlife Management Area, the 1757 acre Tall Pines Wildlife Management Area located in northern Greenville County. The area is now open for hunting, fishing, and hiking. Part of new WMA runs along the South Saluda River, with one parking access off Moody Bridge Road  near Tall Pines Lake. The South Carolina DNR has produced a helpful PDF map of the WMA. While I was adding  the area to OpenStreetMap , I could see some some lakes, disused agricultural fields, old logging roads that all looked interesting, but not a high priority to visit. That changed when I examined a topo map from 1961, and found an old church and a cemetery located in the new WMA. A recent satellite view showed nothing there but trees... which made me highly curious to know what, if anything, remained. First visit to Andersonville Island

One of my major motivations for buying a kayak was to visit interesting places only reachable by water. Andersonville Island in Lake Hartwell is definitely one of those interesting places for me. Since my friend and fellow explorer Tom Taylor has been here before , and since he was clearly interested in heading back, I asked Tom to come along. After checking his availability, he agreed and offered to bring along a friend of his I hadn't met yet, Bennie Waddell. I took some vacation time off this week giving me plenty of days to choose from. I selected Wednesday, the 7th, for this trip to avoid the early week rain, and the later part of the week when the weather turns sharply colder.
